HSC Core Research Facilities

Microarray Facililty

Main

The Microarray Core Facility provides researchers at the University of Utah with access to the Affymetrix and Agilent Technologies microarray platforms and to an Illumina Genome Analyzer, which enables massively parallel DNA sequencing. The Facility is operated as a full-service facility that provides expertise in experimental handling of all aspects of these technologies. Services available through the facility include evaluation of nucleic acid sample quality on a Bioanalyzer, labeling of samples with modified nucleotides(cy dyes or biotin), microarray hybridization, microarray scanning, feature extraction and annotation of scanned images, Illumina sequencing library preparation, Illumina cluster generation and sequencing of prepared libraries on an illumine Genome Analyzer.

The combined support for these technologies offers a diverse set of tools for researchers to measure gene, exon, or miRNA expression; SNP and DNA copy number profiling; location analysis of DNA binding proteins; defining DNA methylation status; and the sequencing of genomic DNA or resequencing of targeted regions of DNA enriched by array capture.

The facility is housed in the Huntsman Cancer Institute Building and consists of 800 ft2 of lab space, including a class 100 clean room for microarray scanning. Instrumentation at the facility includes a NanoDrop ND-1000 Spectrophotometer, an Agilent Bioanalyzer, an Agilent Microarray Scanner, two Agilent hybridization ovens, an Affymetrix GeneChip Hybridization Oven 640, an Affymetrix Fluidics Station 450, and an Affymetrix workstation, two Bio-Rad DNA Engine thermal cyclers, an Applied Biosystems GeneAmp pcr System 9700, an Illumina Cluster Station, and an Illumina Genome Analyzer II.
