Microsatellite
Instability, or RER (replication
error), occurs in tumors when mismatch repair genes are defective. It is detected
by the presence of additional allele sizes in a tumor sample.

Tumor/Normal pair showing additional alles with BAT25, a mono-nucleotide repeat, and D17S250, a di-nucleotide repeat. In the Genomics Core we have two panels available:
The 10 Tetramer Panel has been used
in the Core for several years and includes UT5144, UT269, UT909, UT5013,
UT1205, UT2271, UT574, UT2127, UT5658, and UT868, all of which can be run in
the same lane.
The Five Marker Consensus Panel has
been recommended by the American Joint Commission on Cancer and the
International Collaborative Group on HNPCC. It is composed of BAT25, BAT26,
D5S346 (APC), D2S123, and D17S250. The markers are fluorescently tagged to be
run as a multiplex of 5.
